Background

The bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae can cause potentially deadly infections in children and the elderly, including pneumonia and meningitis. Risk of infection and disease severity varies with age of the patient and a host of other factors including geographical location, ethnic background, and time of year. More than 90 serotypes are known, though less than 25 are responsible for most cases, with virulence often differing between serotypes.

Principle of the Assay

Older Man Speaking with Doctor online
Antibodies play an essential role in the protection against pneumococcal disease. In humans, serum antibodies typically act against the polysaccharide capsule in a serotype specific manner. There are multiple vaccination options for protection against S. pneumoniae, with the major difference being the number and composition of specific serotypes present in the vaccine.

The Q-Plex™ Human Pneumococcal IgG (23-Plex) is a chemiluminescent multiplex ELISA run on two 96-well plates comprising the serotypes found in the Pneumovax®23 vaccine.

A 14-Plex plate detects 14 of the common serotypes individuals are vaccinated against while the second detects 9 additional serotypes commonly used as vaccination targets. Limits for these assays were set using the 007sp Human Anti-Pneumococcal capsule Reference Serum.

The Q-Plex™ Human Pneumococcal IgG (14-Plex) and Q-Plex™ Human Pneumococcal IgG (9-Plex) are also available for individual purchase.

Processing

All Quansys Q-Plex™ Multiplex and Singleplex assays require the use of the Q-View™ Software to read and interpret the test results. A fully-functional, free trial version of the software is available to download, install, and use to analyze your first kit(s). At the end of the trial period, a purchased license is required to continue the use of the Q-View software.

Q-Plex™ Arrays are developed and optimized to work with Q-View™ Imagers. Quansys does not guarantee the results obtained from other imagers and not all imagers are compatible with Quansys Q-Plex Arrays.
