Analyte Description

Macrophage inflammatory protein 2 (MIP-2), also known as CXCL2, Growth-regulated protein beta (Gro-beta), and Gro oncogene-2 (Gro-2), is a small cytokine that plays a role in inflammation. It is secreted by monocytes and macrophages at sites of inflammation, where it is chemotactic for leukocytes, neutrophils, and hematopoietic stem cells. It causes the degranulation of neutrophils at the infection site. It is suspected to suppress hematopoietic stem cell proliferation. It is implicated in blood vessel formation, wound healing, and cancer metastasis and may play a role in other inflammatory conditions. Clinically, MIP-2 is used following bone marrow transplants to mobilize hematopoietic blood cells and restore immune function.
