Human CD-163 Analyte Overview

Human CD-163

Also known as CD163, Cluster of Differentiation 163

CD163 is a scavenger receptor protein with an affinity for hemoglobin/haptoglobin complexes, that can also be referred to as M130 antigen, Ber-Mac3, Ki-M8 or SM4. A component of the innate immune system, it is expressed as a membrane protein in macrophages and monocytes from which it can be shed to operate independently in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid. Its primary function is to remove free hemoglobin and haptoglobin from the body and may also function to detect bacteria and initiate inflammatory responses. CD163 is implicated in many inflammatory diseases, often upregulated in liver cirrhosis, type 2 diabetes, macrophage activation syndrome, Gaucher’s disease, sepsis, HIV infection, rheumatoid arthritis and Hodgkin Lymphoma. It is commonly measured in clinical settings for the detection of sepsis.
