Analyte Description

Matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP1), also known as interstitial collagenase and fibroblast collagenase, is an enzyme involved with breaking down collagens. It is a member of the MMP family, a group of structural related zinc-dependent endopeptidases that are involved in breaking down different components of tissue. MMP1 degrades interstitial collagens, types I, II, and III, typically during periods of drastic tissue remodeling, such as embryonic development and wound healing. MMP1 is secreted as an inactive proprotein and activated by processing with extracellular proteases. Aberrant behavior of MMP1 is associated with many kinds of cancers. As with other member of the MMP family, overactive MMP1 is implicated in degenerative disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis.
