Cytokeratins, or keratins, are important structural elements of the cytoskeleton of epithelial cells. Cytokeratin 21-1 (CYFRA 21-1) is a fragment of cytokeratin 19 and has been demonstrated as a clinically useful biomarker in prognosis and monitoring of non-small cell lung cancer. Elevated pretreatment levels have been associated with unfavorable prognosis, though levels of CYRFRA 21-1 should be considered in the context of clinical evidence to be most useful.
