Human E1G Analyte Overview
Also known as E1G, Estrone-3-Glucuronide
Estrone-3-Glucuronide (E1G) is a metabolite of the hormone estradiol and is identical across all mammalian species. Easily converted to estradiol, E1G is less bioactive and more persistent in the bloodstream, thus serving as a reservoir for future estradiol production. E1G plays an important role in the development and maintenance of a female phenotype, estrous/menstrual cycles, and pregnancy. It is also implicated in many non-gender-specific processes, including growth, nervous system development, bone formation, and skin sensitivity. Estrone is involved in maintaining the flexibility and diameter of blood vessels, and as such is heart and brain protective. E1G is commonly measured to predict windows of peak fertility during assisted reproductive treatments, as its levels indicate the stage of follicle development in the ovaries. Other clinical uses of E1G measurement include the diagnosis of delayed puberty, sex steroid metabolism disorders, evaluation of hypogonadism, and monitoring of menopause treatments. High levels of E1G are considered a risk factor for hormone driven cancers, particularly breast cancer.
