Human Eotaxin-1

Also known as Eosinophil Chemotactic Protein, Chemokine ligand 11 (CCL11)

Eotaxins are a group of three cytokines, eotaxin-1, eotaxin-2, and eotaxin-3, that share similar structure and function. Eotaxins chemoattract eosinophils, which they are capable of activating and regulating during an immune response. Eotaxins have the unique ability to selectively prime eosinophils for chemotaxis, direct their migration/chemotaxis, and activate inflammatory activity in the cells attracted. Due to their role in attracting and activating eosinophils, eotaxins are implicated in allergies and eczema. High levels of eotaxin-1 are associated with aging and schizophrenia. Eotaxin-1 is also often found upregulated in cannabis users. Eotaxin-2 is also a chemoattractant for T lymphocytes and neutrophils. Its concentration is associated with risk and severity of asthma symptoms.
