Human MMP3 Analyte Overview
Also known as MMP-3, CHDS6, SL-1, STMY, STMY1, STR1, Matrix Metalloproteinase-3, Stromelysin-1
Matrix metalloproteinase 3 (MMP3), also known as stromelysin-1, is an enzyme that is involved with remodeling tissues. It is a member of the MMP family, a group of structural related zinc-dependent endopeptidases that are involved in breaking down different components of tissue. MMP3 is capable of degrading many components of the extracellular matrix involved in connective tissue, including collagen types II, III, IV, IX, and X, proteoglycans, fibronectin, laminin, and elastin. MMP3 is also capable of recruiting and activating other members of the MMP family. It plays roles in early development and wound healing, as well as in at artery disease and tumor formation. Following a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury, elevated levels of MMP3 can contribute to additional damage from inflammation by disrupting the blood-brain barrier/blood spinal cord barrier. Due to its dramatic remodeling capabilities which can be coopted to support tumor formation, MMP3 is implicated in a wide range of cancers.
