Human MPO Analyte Overview
Also known as MPO, Myeloperpxidase
Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a peroxidase enzyme produced primarily by granulocytes within neutrophils. It creates a powerful oxidant, hypochlorous acid, that has bactericidal and viricidal abilities and gives neutrophils their antimicrobial properties. MPO is stored in azurophilic granules and released during degranulation. When the body forms antibodies against MPO, it can lead to destruction of blood vessel walls in many kinds of vasculitis. MPO is implicated in cardiac diseases, elevated levels are particularly associated with coronary artery disease. MPO may also contribute to the atherosclerosis by promoting endothelial dysfunction. MPO staining is frequently used in the diagnosis of myeloid sarcoma. MPO is commonly used to predict myocardial infractions in patients with chest pain.
