Ferritin is the primary intracellular iron storage protein in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Its major function is iron homeostasis. Ferritin handles the storage of iron in a soluble, nontoxic state, protecting from both iron deficiency and toxic iron buildup. Small amounts of ferritin are secreted into serum where it also functions as an iron carrier. Plasma ferritin can act as an indirect marker for iron storage.
