NHP MIG Analyte Overview
Also known as Monokine Induced by Gamma Interferon, Chemokine Ligand 9, CXCL9
Monokine induced by gamma interferon (MIG), also known as Chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 9 (CXCL9), is a small cytokine produced in response to IFNγ. In the presence of IFNγ, macrophages and glial cells in the central nervous system produce MIG to attract activated T cells and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes. High levels of MIG is a risk factor for heart failure and left ventricular dysfunction, suggestion that the cytokine may play a role in cardiac health. Clincally, MIG is used as a biomarker to diagnose Q fever, an infection caused by the bacterium Coxiella burnetiid. MIG plays nuanced roles in tumor formation and progression, where it has been found to both suppress and promote tumors at different stages of tumor development. Despite its potential to suppress cancer in some situations, high levels of MIG are more often associated with tumor growth.
