SARS-CoV-2 is the coronavirus responsible for the global pandemic that began in 2019 (Covid-19). Coronaviruses usually consist of four structural proteins: spike protein, envelope protein, membrane protein, and nucleocapsid protein. The nucleocapsid protein is important for transcription, replication, and packaging of viral RNA into a helical ribonucleocapsid. Nucleocapsid protein is abundant during active infection and is highly immunogenic, making it a useful as a target for serological diagnostics.
