Analyte Description

C-X-C motif chemokine 5 (CXCL5), also known as epithelial-derived neutrophil-activating peptide 78 (ENA-78), is a small cytokine produced in response to the inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1 or TNF-alpha. During an acute inflammatory response, CXCL5 encourages the movement of neutrophils that promote blood vessel formation to the site of a wound. Thanks to its angiogenic properties, CXCL5 also promotes connective tissue remodeling. It is found in high levels in patients with atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammatory condition, where it has a protective function. CXCL5 has been shown to reduce pain sensitivity in patients with severe sunburn and is a potential target for pain mediation in inflammatory diseases.
