Interleukin 22 (IL-22) is a powerful and versatile member of the IL-10 cytokine superfamily that mediates cellular inflammatory responses. It is produced by natural killer cells and T cells to activate innate immune responses to bacterial invaders in the epithelial cells that line the gut and respiratory systems, hepatocytes in the liver, and keratinocytes in the skin. It promotes the production of anti-microbial peptides and pro-inflammatory mediators by these cells. It is believed to play a role in coordinating the activities of the innate and adaptive immune responses. It is involved in wound healing on all epithelial surfaces, maintaining the epithelial barrier of the skin, intestines, respiratory tract, and hepatocytes, while also regenerating pancreatic tissue after injury. IL-22 works to regulate metabolic pathways by activating genes that are involved in lipid synthesis. Irregular expression of IL-22 and its signaling pathway are associated with inflammatory and autoimmune diseases including psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.
