Analyte Description

Matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2), also known as gelatinase A, is an enzyme capable of breaking down type IV collagen. It is a member of the MMP family, a group of structural related zinc-dependent endopeptidases that are involved in breaking down different components of tissue. MMP2 degrades basement membranes made of type IV collagen, particularly during the menstrual cycle and early embryonic development. Overactivity of MMP2 is associated with severe chronic airway diseases, particularly pneumonia and bronchiectasis. Elevated MMP2 is associated with many types of cancer, where it’s effects on tumor progression are well documented – it supports tumor invasion into tissue, alters cell signaling to dampen immune response to the tumor, and promotes tumor blood vessel formation. Given MMP2’s role in multiple aspects of cancer biology, it is under investigation as a potential target for cancer medications.
