Human FGF-21 Analyte Overview
Also known as fibroblast growth factor 21
Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a member of the FGF superfamily of endocrine hormones and is mainly secreted by the liver. It signals through a complex composed of classic FGF receptors and β-Klotho. FGF21 has broad mitogenic and cell survival properties and has been noted to play roles in embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, as well as tissue growth and invasion. This broad functionality can be carried out local and through the circulatory system. It is thought to focus on the liver, adipose tissues, pancreas, central nervous system, and testes as sites of action since β-Klotho expression is higher in those regions.
