Human HRP2
Also known as Plasmodium falciparum HRP2, Histidine rich protein 2
Histidine rich protein 2 (HRP2) is a protein consisting of over 70% histidine residues with unknown function. In Plasmodium falciparum it may play a role in binding or neutralizing heme in the cytoplasm of erythrocytes as well as suppressing the immune response through inhibition of IFNγ production. Notably, since HRP2 is an abundant blood-stage protein it has proven useful to develop antibodies against for detection of certain strains of Plasmodium.
