Also known as insulin-like growth factor 1, somatomedin C, somatomedin A
Structurally similar to pro-insulin, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is the primary mediator of the effects of growth hormone. Plays roles in fetal development, growth during childhood and adolescence, and adult tissue homeostasis. Also considered a risk factor in some forms of cancer due to how it promotes proliferation. Elicits function by signaling through IGF-1 receptor, insulin receptor substrate 1 and 2, and by modulating the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway.
