Human IL-21 Analyte Overview
Also known as IL-21, Interleukin 21
Interleukin 21 (IL-21) is a powerful cytokine that regulates the cells of both the innate and adaptive immune systems. In healthy individuals, IL-21 is produced by activated T cells, and it is also produced by cancerous cells in Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It is particularly influential on natural killer cells and cytotoxic T cells which work to eliminate infected and cancerous cells from the body. It also induces the proliferation of T cells, B cells, and natural killer cells. Dysregulation of IL-21 is often associated with immune-mediated diseases such as lupus, chronic inflammatory diseases, and psoriasis. Clinically, administration of IL-21 reduces the severity of allergic responses, encourages an anti-tumor immune response, and controls persistent viral infections. In patients with HIV, IL-21 inhibits viral reproduction and improves the function of other immune system components.
